On Saturday 16th July 2016 the Leeds Under-Twenty-Ones had a 6-3 win over Bridlington Town at Queensgate in front of a crowd of 333 on a warm sunny afternoon. They included five trialists and opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute when a corner was squared back to Tom Pearce and from twenty-five yards he fired a shot through a crowded penalty area and past the Bridlington goalkeeper, James Hitchcock, into the far corner of his net. Bridlington responded well and from a corner of their own, in the thirty-third minute, after Leeds had failed to clear, Brett Agnew beat a defender and goalkeeper, Theo Richardson, on the line to equalize. Gary Owen missed a good chance for the hosts when his effort just cleared the angle of post and crossbar but Brett Agnew gave his side the lead four minutes before half-time after Joel Sutton's neat pass had found him unmarked, and his crisp shot got past Theo Richardson and hit the inside of the post before finding the back of the net. It would have seen Bridlington ahead at the break, but in the final minute of the half a fine Leeds passing movement set Tom Pearce free down the left and he cut in before he beat James Hitchcock with a stunning shot that flew into the top corner of the net. Bridlington made a number of changes and before they could get their teamwork working Leeds punished them with a flurry of goals as three of the six Leeds trialists scored in the forty-eighth, fifty-third and sixty-third minutes to give them a 5-2 lead and the game was over as a contest. In the seventy-seventh minute Lewis Knight was put through and his mishit shot bobbled past James Hitchcock and in off the post to score the sixth Leeds goal. A minute later Bridlington reduced the arrears when their new signing, Danny Chambers, got his first goal for the club to reduce the arrears. There was no further scoring, but both teams went close in the dying stages, as Bridlington's Joel Sutton was fractionally off target from a free-kick and Lewis Knight was unlucky not to score with the final kick of the game but the game finished in a 6-3 win to the visitors, who had turned in a dominant second half performance.

MATCH REPORT: Bridlington Town 3 Leeds United U21s 6

Leeds United’s stars of tomorrow enjoyed their trip to the seaside as they put six past hosts Bridlington Town. On a warm and sunny afternoon at Queensgate, the Championship side’s youngsters opened the scoring on 17 minutes when a corner was pulled back to Tom Pearce, 25 yards out, and he fired a shot through a crowded penalty area and into the far corner of James Hitchcock’s goal. Bridlington responded well and when a corner of their own was not properly cleared by the Leeds defence, the ball eventually fell to Brett Agnew, who beat the keeper and a defender on the line to equalise just past the half-hour mark. And the big Scottish striker thought he had given the Seasiders a half-time lead when he clinically drove a shot past Theo Richardson, which clipped the inside of the right-hand post before landing in the net. But in the final minute of the first half, a lovely Leeds passing move set Pearce free down the left and he arrowed a stunning effort across Hitchcock and into the top corner. After an evenly-matched opening 45 minutes, Bridlington made a number of changes at the break, and United punished them. A flurry of goals by three of Leeds’ six trialists put the visitors 5-2 ahead and the game was over as a contest. Late on, Lewis Knight ran through and scuffed a shot past Hitchcock, which bobbled in off the post to make it six, but almost immediately Town’s new signing Danny Chambers got his first goal for the club to reduce the arrears. There was no more scoring, although both teams went close in the dying stages, with Brid’s Joel Sutton fractionally off-target with a free kick and Knight unlucky not to add his second with the very last kick of the game.

A Leeds United under 21 side that included five trialists enjoyed their afternoon in the sun at the coast to run out clear winners with a dominant second half performance following a tight first period in front of over 300 spectators. The visitors took the lead following a corner in the seventeenth minute when defender Tom Pearce hit a shot from the corner of the penalty area that flew past Town goalkeeper James Hitchcock. The Seasiders rallied and just after the half-hour Brett Agnew equalised when the visiting defence failed to clear a corner. Gary Owen missed a good chance for the hosts when his effort just cleared the angle of post and crossbar but they went in front five minutes before the break. Joel Sutton’s neat pass found Agnew unmarked and he finished with a crisp shot that went in via a post. It appeared that Town would go into half time in the lead but in the final minute Pearce ended a fine passing move by sending a fierce shot past Hitchcock. With the Seasiders making several changes for the second half the Leeds youngsters took control and before twenty minutes had passed three of the trialists had made it 5-2. With thirteen minutes remaining substitute Lewis Knight added a sixth when his scuffed shot just trickled in off a post then within a minute Danny Chambers scored his first goal for the Seasiders to reduce the arrears. Despite both sides going close in the dying minutes that was the end of the scoring of a fine afternoon’s entertainment.
